Still a little wonky. But better than my first try.

For today I decided to try something I have been thinking about for a while. How to incorporate some mixed media techniques with oils. So, I got out a background I had prepared this summer, masonite board with scrapbook paper pieces glued to it. I applied a few coats of clear gesso to the top of the paper pieces and drew my cake. Then I painted over it with oil paints.

For those of you who don't know, it's generally a no-no to mix acrylic paints and oils paints. It's the way they dry and if you mix them, you might get some cracking.

It was really a lot of fun. It was fun to just play a bit. I get way to serious painting still lifes. Which reminds me...I'm going to taking a class in May with Robert Burridge. I really can't wait! He's all about having fun and painting freely...I'm pretty anal when I paint. So, I think this will be really good for me. Plus it's in acrylics. A medium I'm really having a hard time mastering.

The problem with acrylics...they dry so fast! I mean super fast. Before I can blend them. I do have a little something up my sleeve I'm going to try with acrylics tomorrow.

pink!

My husband is adding the finishing touches to the wall that needed repaired and I think by the end of this week the room will be ready to paint and for me to move into.

My FAVORITE colors are pink, orange and green. Since our kitchen is orange, we have a green dining room and Gabriel's room is green, the only color left for my studio is PINK! We're actually going to paint one wall pink the the remainder white.

I switched my header today. It's the little art piece that I completed for the Visual Fusion challenge. I need to deliver it to The Art Mill tomorrow.

The projects I'm going to be working on for the next few weeks are very "fall" in color. Can't wait to show you.

AND daily painting will be starting very soon!!

four oh!

It's my 40th birthday today! I'm really not sure how this happened. Where has the time gone and why do I still feel in many ways like I should be a little more sophisticated...a little more of an adult? Maybe it's a good thing...

For my birthday I thought it would be FUN to make myself a piece of art. So, here is my 40th birthday cake. I used a technique new to me, torn paper collage, for this piece and I'll share more about it soon!

Plans for the day have been a big secret...so I'll have to let you know tomorrow how the day went.

taking a break

"Independence Day"

I'm taking a break from painting this week. I feel really guilty about this, but I just need some time to think. I've been learning so much in my "Flying Lessons" I just need a week to take some time to process it.

Also, I have an exhibit coming up with my studio quilts. I know I said those were behind me, but I made nine quilts this spring that I think really need to be exhibited and I have an opportunity to do so with the Lincoln Artists' Guild.

So, I'll see you next week...for those of you in the United States, have a safe, fun, happy, wonderful FOURTH OF JULY!!

I started painting from life so my cakes would have more dimension. This is the first cake I’ve painted in a long time.
